On January 11 at 2 pm, Rich Thomas will present a program called Cultural and Natural History of Port Royal Sound at the Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head. The program will examine the geology, hydrology, natural and human history of the Port Royal Sound watershed area of South Carolina and explores the reasons its history is so deep, diverse and rich. 

 Discover why early civilizations and colonies so highly regarded its shores and how the unique features of its environment have been utilized by successive periods of inhabitants.

The cost of the program is $7 per person for in person viewing and $5 for virtual viewing.  Reservations are required and may be made by calling 843-689-6767 ext. 223.

The Coastal Discovery Museum will host Jake Zadik for An Introduction to Lowcountry Amphibians on January 25 at 2 pm. Amphibians include some of the most fascinating and bizarre organisms on this planet . . . and the Lowcountry certainly has no shortage of amphibian diversity! From frogs that live high up in the trees, to giant salamanders that live beneath the mud. Jake will provide us with some insight and information on the life histories of these unique organisms, as well as conservation issues threatening these animals.

Zadik has worked as a professional naturalist and environmental educator in the Lowcountry for the last 10 years.

On January 27, the Museum will host An Initiative to Monitor Marine Diversity with Dr. Laura May Collado. ONDAS – An initiative to monitor marine diversity – examines the role of Marine Protected Areas in preserving marine biodiversity and argues the need for novel tools to evaluate their effectiveness. Dr. May Collado introduces her ONDAS project on initiative for coordinated long-term and standardized monitoring of marine communities in Central America.Dr. Collado is an integrative marine biologist with a research focus on sound as a tool to study marine communities and marine mammal communication and behavior.

The Coastal Discovery Museum is located at 70 Honey Horn Drive on Hilton Head Island. The museum is open Monday through Saturday 9-4 and Sunday 11-3.
